NTPC Koldam Bilaspur

With the start of reservoir impounding today Koldam, the flagship Hydro Power Project of NTPC shall be ready to generate power by year 2014-15. Koldam project with an installed capacity of 800 MW ( 4x200 MW) will provide the much needed peaking capacity to the Northern grid and annually generate 3054 GWh electricity at 90% dependable year basis. NTPC took up implementation of its first hydro venture-Koldam Hydro Power Project on river Satluj in distt. Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh after Techno Economic Clearance (TEC) and award of Main Dam package in Dec, 2003.
ddressing the employees after inaugurating the filling up of the reservoir Dr. Arup Roy Choudhury, CMD , NTPC appreciated their efforts and exhorted them to continue with the same zeal for some more time and bring the project on stream at the earliest. Shri N.N. Misra, Director (Operations), Shri A.K. Jha, Director ( Tech) , Shri S.C. Pandey, Director ( Projects), Shri V.K. Gupta Executive Director ( Hydro ) and Shri A.K. Nanda, General Manager(Koldam) were present on the occasion. The Project faced several challenges during its construction due to geological surprises and environmental issues. With dedication and commitment of the team Koldam, the project is nearing its completion stage with the start of reservoir impounding which is expected to take 10-11 months to complete. The Koldam Project is located 6 Kms upstream of Dehar Power House of Beas Satluj Link Project (BSL) and is expected to enhance the life of Bhakra Reservoir considerably by trapping the sediments of river Satluj in Koldam. The project has several unique features like Diversion Structure, 163 metre high Rock fill Dam, Spillway ,Decanting Chamber Power House and Switchyard. The associated Transmission system for Koldam, is presently being developed by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. Considering the high silt content of the Satluj river, the life of the reservoir is expected to be 30 years. The cost of the Koldam project at Dec., 2001 price level (excluding IDC) is Rs. 4527.15 crores . The project shall provide electricity to Himachal Pradesh (12% free of cost 15% on Bus Bar tariff & 2.75% of grid allocation) and balance to SEBs of Northern Grid as per GOI allocation. Presently, NTPC is constructing about 1500 MW hydro capacity with 800 MW at Koldam , 520 MW at Tapovan Vishnugad, 171 MW at Lata Tapovan and 8 MW at Singrauli. The total installed capacity of NTPC is 42454 MW from its 16 coal based, 7 gas based, 6 Joint Venture power stations and two renewable projects. NTPC contributed about 28% of electricity in the country, with about 19% of India's installed capacity in the year 2012-13.
